The problem with drilling out a NM rear sight is that they are precision drilled off center so the rotation of the hood changes your impact +/- 1/2 moa. Basically going up just a little at a time shouldn't hurt anything, especially if you use a reamer. Make sure you are drilling straight though the hole, not off-center.
