The solid smiley is when you actually have the LH surge. Someone told me that the flashing smiley means you have a surge in estrogen not neccesarily a LH surge. One other issue the Clearblue literature doesn't do a great job explaining is that the number of high fertility/blinking smiley face days can vary quite a bit from cycle to cycle.
