It turns on fine, but once I hit the starter it just clicks. Have checked all the usual things. I have had the bike over a year and am afraid to ride it. Sometimes it starts and sometimes not.

The service manual shows how to do a "dealer mode 1 and or dealer mode 2" test that may help you to find the problem, or you may have one of these: alternator trouble, wiring faulty, regualtor/rectifer trouble. I will start looking at those first. My 900 has 1100 miles, no problems at all. Good luck, keep posted.

Measure the pickup coil peak voltage: Remove the ignitor coupler. Connect the peak voltage tester with the + probe to the blue/white lead wire and the - probe to the green lead wire. Turn the ignition on, pull the clutch and crank the engine for a few seconds. peak voltage should be more than 1.5 volts.

Evidently I was shifting at way too high rpm even tho the motor was not sounding like it. I read in owners manual the shifting speeds: Gear speed/ mph. 1st 0 - 12.2. The clutch setup could be a cheap one and you are now seeing or witnessing the cheapness of it. 3. Maybe a part in the clutch system has a fault in it. 4. When bike seems to be up to temperature, shut off. 5. Hose should remain firm for quite a while meaning it should not go soft quite quickly.
Vulcan Nomad Clutch Problem. My 1600 seems to have no clutch. When shifting from neutral to first, it just lunges forward and stalls. Checked fluid level and bled the lines, they seem fine.
